Finding Inner Peace: Exploring the Benefits and Techniques of Meditation

What is meditation?

There are numerous ways to conceive of meditation. On one hand, it is a technique to focus and calm the mind to become familiar with yourself. Ultimately recognizing the nature of our true Being.

Many have an image of meditation, sitting in a lotus position for hours. That’s simply not the case. I began meditation on a daily basis after a journey to Southeast Asia in 2004, I was there for seven weeks. I started each morning sitting quietly focusing on my breath. With consistent daily practice it became a healthy habit that’s been a part of my life ever since. I'm so grateful for my meditation practice because I find myself more calm, peaceful and balanced. It’s a great technique to incorporate in your life when you're feeling distracted, stressed, or overwhelmed.

Some Benefits of Meditation:

Emotional Benefits:

  • Helps manage stress

  • Increases self awareness

  • Reduces negative emotions

Physical benefits:

  • Decreases heart rate

  • Decreases blood pressure

  • Improves sleep

I've incorporated this relaxation technique in the dentist chair. Focusing on my breathing and intentionally reducing the tension of my muscles. Because of this my visits to the dentist are a much more pleasant experience.

Meditation will help manage symptoms of:

  • Anxiety

  • Chronic pain and actually

  • Tension headaches

Elements of meditation:

  • Focused attention

    • The Breath

    • Mantra- a word that you repeat over silently or out loud

    • Image-photo, candle flame, mental image

    • Quiet setting

    • Being in a comfortable position-sitting, lying down. You can also do walking meditation.

The idea is to take your meditation practice into situations and scenarios in your everyday life. Just by having focused attention, of the practice of your choice, to calm your mind and body. If you do this on a consistent basis you'll be amazed at the benefits you’ll experience emotionally and physically. It will translate into a feeling of well-being in all aspects of your life.
